Alice of Normandy (also known as Adeliza or Adelicia) was born around 1050. She was the daughter of William the Conqueror, the Duke of Normandy, and his wife Matilda of Flanders. As a young girl, she was sent to Germany to marry Henry IV, the Holy Roman Emperor, in 1066. However, the marriage was not successful and they were later divorced in 1077.
After her divorce, Alice returned to England and married the Earl of Louvain, later known as Baldwin I, the first King of Jerusalem. Together they had four children, including Matilda of Flanders, who would go on to become Queen of England as the wife of Henry I.
Alice was known for her beauty and intelligence, and she was highly respected by her contemporaries. She was also a patron of the arts and literature, and is credited with introducing new fashions and customs from Europe to England.
Alice died in 1138 and was buried in Affligem Abbey in modern-day Belgium.
